Bible Verses About Anxiety
What to do with a mind that will not settle
A daily prayer & verse
Scripture to help you thrive in love, wealth, and health — a little light in your inbox.
Scripture takes anxiety seriously and answers it with something to do rather than something to feel. Philippians 4:6-7 does not say stop worrying; it says bring it, in detail, and names the peace that follows. Peter says cast the care, which is an action with a direction. Jesus argues with worry directly in Matthew 6, using birds and flowers as the evidence. These are the verses people reach for at 3am, and most of them are short enough to hold without a book.
12 verses about anxiety
- Philippians 4:6-7
- “In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”
- The central passage. Anxious for nothing, but only because everything goes somewhere else first.
- 1 Peter 5:7
- “casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.”
- Cast the care. An action with a direction, and a reason attached: he cares for you.
- Matthew 6:25-27
- “Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they? “Which of you by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan?”
- Jesus argues with worry rather than scolding it, using birds as the evidence.
- Matthew 6:34
- “Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.”
- Worry cut down to one day. The oldest and most practical advice on this list.
- Isaiah 41:10
- “Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.”
- Fear not, because I am with you. Presence offered before help is offered.
- Psalm 94:19
- “In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.”
- For the mind that will not stop: in the multitude of my thoughts, comfort.
- John 14:27
- “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.”
- Peace given, and named as unlike the peace the world hands out.
- Proverbs 12:25
- “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad.”
- Anxiety weighs the heart down, and a kind word makes it glad. Permission to speak to someone.
- Psalm 55:22
- “Cast your burden on the LORD and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.”
- Cast the burden. The psalm around it is written by a man being hunted.
- Joshua 1:9
- “Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.””
- A command to courage given to a man taking over from Moses, which is context worth knowing.
- 2 Timothy 1:7
- “For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”
- Not a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
- Psalm 34:4
- “I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
- I sought, he heard, he delivered. The sequence is the comfort.

How to use these verses
Take Philippians 4:6-7 as instructions rather than encouragement. It names three actions — prayer, supplication, thanksgiving — and the last one is the hardest and the most effective. For a night when your mind will not stop, Psalm 4:8 and Psalm 94:19 are short enough to repeat. For a long anxious season rather than a bad hour, Matthew 6:34 narrows the problem to today on purpose, which is the same move a good therapist makes.
A moment to reflect
It is worth being honest about what these verses are and are not. Philippians 4:6-7 is a promise about peace guarding your heart, not a promise that the circumstance changes or that clinical anxiety lifts because you prayed well enough. Many faithful people take medication and read these verses on the same day, and Scripture gives no reason to feel ashamed of that. If you carry anxiety as a condition rather than a mood, treat these as company rather than as a cure, and tell someone. Proverbs 12:25 practically prescribes it.

Frequently asked
What is the best Bible verse for anxiety?
Philippians 4:6-7 is the most quoted, because it gives an instruction and a result. 1 Peter 5:7 is shorter and easier to hold in an anxious moment: casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
Does the Bible say anxiety is a sin?
Scripture treats anxiety as a burden to be handed over rather than as a crime to be punished. Jesus addresses worry in Matthew 6 by reasoning with it, and Peter tells readers to cast their care because God cares for them.
What Bible verse helps with anxiety at night?
Psalm 4:8 and Psalm 94:19 are the two most used for a sleepless night. Both are short enough to repeat without a book, which is the practical test at 3am.
