The Bible's best-known definition of love is not a feeling at all. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul describes love as a set of behaviours — patience, kindness, refusing to keep a record of wrongs — which is why the passage survives wedding after wedding without wearing out. Scripture then widens it: God's love comes first, human love answers it, and nothing in creation can cut you off from it. These are the verses people reach for at weddings, in hard seasons, and when love has to be chosen rather than felt.

How to use these verses
Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 slowly and put your own name where the word love appears. It stops being poetry and becomes a mirror, which is exactly what Paul intended. For a wedding or a card, the short verses carry better than the long ones — Colossians 3:14 and 1 Peter 4:8 fit on a single line. For a season when love feels like work rather than warmth, sit with Romans 12:9-10, which treats love as something you practise on purpose.
A moment to reflect
It is worth noticing what the famous passage leaves out. Paul never says love is a feeling, never says it arrives, and never says it is easy. He lists what love does and does not do, and every item is something you can choose today whether or not the feeling is present. If a relationship in your life feels thin right now, the passage does not ask you to summon warmth. It asks for patience this afternoon, and for one wrong left unrecorded.
